Siemon’s Dynamic Infrastructure Forum examines the future of the connected world
December 2015 - Siemon, a leading global network infrastructure specialist, recently hosted its inaugural Dynamic Infrastructure Forum, where experts from Siemon joined forces with representatives from Redstone, Philips, Cisco and the chairman of the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers Intelligent Buildings Group (CIBSE). The half-day event took place at the prestigious Urban Innovation Centre in London - a purpose built venue designed for businesses, academics and industry leaders to develop the cities of the future.
Many top level delegates attended the Dynamic Infrastructure Forum to hear about the ideas and technologies that are making next generation buildings a reality. With an ever increasing range of Internet protocol (IP) enabled applications now available including security, VoIP, lighting, audio visual, digital signage and HVAC, the immediate challenge is to understand how best to design and implement the right solutions for organisations of all kinds.
Every minute there are 41,000 Facebook posts, 204 million emails sent, 72 hours of video uploaded to YouTube and 36,000 photos posted on Instagram. Network infrastructures play a vital role in making this happen and in his presentation Lee Funnell, EMEA technical manager at Siemon, examined how the increase in connected devices is fuelling the growth of intelligent buildings that integrate technology and processes to create facilities that are safer, more comfortable and productive for occupants, and more operationally efficient for owners. Drawing on Siemon's ConvergeIT™ expertise, he went on to discuss how cutting edge structured cabling solutions are facilitating an ever-increasing portfolio of IP PoE-enabled applications.
Funnell was joined on stage by Derek Clements-Croome, chairman and founder of the CIBSE Intelligent Buildings Group, who gave an overview of the trends in the sector, as well as Darren Smith, national key account manager of strategic design partnerships at Philips, who discussed how IP enabled LED lighting, sensors and controls are revolutionising the lighting market. Delegates also heard from Stephen Corkin, sales manager for smart buildings at Redstone and Maria Hernandez, Internet of Everything lead UK at Cisco, who discussed how our insatiable appetite for data is going to mean an exponential rise in the number of connected devices and users.
The afternoon also featured a Q&A session, where the speakers shared more information about the technologies currently available and how they can be implemented now to support operations for the long-term. The event was rounded off with a champagne networking session, which enabled delegates to find out more about their specific areas of interest.
'We are delighted with the response to the Dynamic Infrastructure Forum, which highlighted the clear interest there is in intelligent buildings and converged infrastructures,' concluded Daniel Vout, Siemon's sales and marketing manager EMEA. 'As a company, we have been at the forefront in providing cabling systems that provide a scalable foundation to enable convergence of a building's systems onto a common IP platform. We are currently planning another Dynamic Infrastructure Forum for 2016, which will provide another opportunity to find out more about this exciting and fast moving trend.'
