Lee Funnell explores key challenges for intelligent buildings at Smart Building Conference
February 2017 - Lee Funnell, technical manager EMEA at network infrastructure specialist Siemon, was an expert speaker at the 2017 Smart Building Conference in Amsterdam on 6 February. As part of the keynote programme, he spoke on the subject of cabling trends in intelligent buildings and joined other industry experts including Google and Cisco to highlight the key developments and challenges facing this market today.
Presenting to an audience of around 200 systems integrators, building industry consultants, facilities managers, architects, interior designers and property developers, Siemon who were bronze sponsors for the conference, had specific insight to share on how to create the right infrastructure for smart buildings. Lee Funnell's presentation titled 'Cabling the Smart Building', reviewed key challenges and considerations in light of the ever increasing number of IP-enabled devices and applications connected to the building network. This included a critical review of the current approach to smart buildings, highlighting the need to discuss the differences between an interfaced and a truly integrated approach and exploring how the development and deployment of a smart building infrastructure can fundamentally change the quality of the building delivered.
Exploring the power and potential of converged infrastructure in smart buildings, Lee Funnell explained how a structured cabling system can become a critical building asset; one that reduces costs, simplifies application deployment, enhances the workplace experience, and maximises the opportunities to qualify for all physical layer and audiovisual innovation technology credits. ConvergeIT™ is Siemon's converged, IP-based intelligent building cabling system, which uses a single, simplified structured cabling infrastructure for a smarter, greener building. It is designed to help architects, design-build firms, building owners and contractors plan and deploy efficient IT cabling infrastructure for support of green intelligent buildings, to support services such as voice/data, wireless access, HD CCTV, access control, audio/video, fire alarms, energy management, PoE (Power over Ethernet) lighting and HVAC.
"We are delighted to have been involved in this year's Smart Building Conference," said René Proost, sales manager for the Benelux at Siemon. "We continue to work at the forefront of providing cabling systems and network infrastructures for intelligent buildings, that enable us and our partners to create a scalable foundation to our customers and we value the opportunity to share our knowledge on this ever-evolving subject."
The Smart Building Conference is a one-day event and part of Integrated Systems Europe which was held at the RAI in Amsterdam from 7-10 February 2017. With a pan-European focus, the conference discusses the latest smart building technologies, business strategies, market research and case studies which are presented by world leading smart building experts and thought leaders.
